IRVING, TX -- The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) has announced the names of the 35 finalists for the 2017 NFF Chapter Scholar-Athlete Awards, which honor one young man from each of the country's five regions as 'the best and the brightest for their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and citizens at the high school level'.
Williams College's Bobby Maimaron (DuxburyHigh School, Duxbury MA) has been named one of those finalists. The nominees each graduated from high school in 2017 and are continuing their football careers at the college level. A national committee will select five honorees and are expected to announce them on October 4. The five honorees will travel to the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, on December 5th at the New York Hilton Midtown.
The 2017 Gatorade Massachusetts Football Player of the Year had the somewhat uncommon experience of starting as a freshman at the school where his father was the head coach, but once he took the field, his athleticism and understanding of the game left no doubt he was where he belonged. In his senior season, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior quarterback led the Dragons to a 12-1 record and the Division 2 state championship in 2016. Maimaron completed 160-of-267 passes for 2,621 yards and 40 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He also ran for 878 yards and 14 scores. In the state final, Maimaron passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-7 win over Shrewsbury High. He concluded his prep career with a state-record 122 touchdown passes.
According to NFF President & DEO Steve Hatchell, "It will be a difficult task to select one from each region as the absolute best. Each possesses incredible talent in all facets of their lives, and it is a tremendous honor for us to highlight their accomplishments. The NFF Chapter Network continues to grow and excel, and their work this year has allowed us to identify these 35 exceptional high school scholar-athletes who have clearly established themselves among the best in the nation."
