Ephs to Race at Henley Royal Regatta

Henley on Thames, England-The Williams College Men's Crew arrived in Henley on Thames, England, on June 12th to begin final preparations for this year's Henley Royal Regatta.

The Henley Royal Regatta is one of the oldest and most prestigious regattas in the world, drawing thousands of fans, and hundreds of crews from across the world each year. It takes place in the small British town of Henley on Thames situated on the River Thames about an hour outside of London. The race course is 2112 meters, slightly longer than the standard 2000 meters raced by the crew during the year.

This is Williams 7th trip to Henley, with the first trip occurring in 1977. The Ephs most recent trip to Henley occurred in 2008.

The format of the regatta is a duel race knockout draw. Crews are placed into a draw against the field of teams in their event. Crews are assigned opponents based on the draw, and race with the winner advancing to race the next day and the loser being knocked out of the regatta. The last crew remaining is crowned the winner.

The Ephs sent two boats to Henley, the Varsity Eight is entered in the Temple Challenge Cup and the Varsity Four is entered in the Prince Albert's Cup.

The Varsity Eight features the same crew from the regular season; Sam Ellison '18, Charlie Sheils '17, Andrew Rondeau '17, Erik Bovino '19, Graham Buchan '17, Michael Polson '17, Alex Ruberto '17, Drew West '19 and coxswain Devin Flynn '18. The Temple Challenge Cup is the student eights event at Henley, featuring college teams from the UK, US, and across Europe.

The Varsity Four combines members of the regular season's JV & Frosh boats with members Aaron Finder '17, Jack Ellrodt '20, Jarrett Heflin '20, Charlie Ide '20, and coxswain Jamie Sullivan '18. The Prince Albert's Cup is the coxed fours equivalent to the Temple Challenge Cup.

The team is currently staying with a host family in Henley and training for the regatta on the racecourse. Before the start of the Henley Royal Regatta, the Ephs will be racing at the Marlow Regatta on June 17th and Reading Regatta on June 24th as tuneups.

Members of the team will be maintaining a blog of their training which can be found here.

The first day of racing for the Henley Royal Regatta is Wednesday June 28th.
