WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Mike Monti's Williams College men's ice hockey team has opened the season at 5-0-0/4-0-0 NESCAC and it has also opened the eyes of the voters in the D3Hockey.com and USCHO.com national polls.
This week Williams moved from not ranked to 13th in the 15-team D3Hockey.com poll and into 14th in the USCHO.com 15-team poll.
St. Norbert College (Wisc.) at 9-0-1 is ranked first in both national polls.
The Ephs' first three wins came at home and the last two this past weekend came on the road. In the five games to date Williams is averaging 4.4 goals a game, while allowing 2.0 per contest.
Six Ephs are averaging at least a point a game with junior Marcus Mollica leading with seven points on three goals and four assists. Seniors C.J. Shugart (4g, 2a) and Joe Welch (1g, 5a) have six points thus far. Senior David Italiano (3g, 2a) and junior Roberto Cellini (2g, 3a) each have five points.
Junior netminder Michael Pinios has played 180 minutes between the pipes going 3-0-0. Pinios has faced 77 shots and by turning aside 72 he sports a goals against average of 1.67. Senior Stephen Morrissey has logged just under 120 minutes to date and is 2-0-0. Morrissey has stopped 47 of 52 shots and owns a goal against average of 2.50.
The Ephs have been successful on eight of 21 power plays (.381), while being successful on 13 of 16 (.812) penalty kill opportunities.
This weekend the Ephs will return to the road to play two NESCAC contests. Friday the Ephs will travel to archrival Amherst for a 7:00 p.m. Friday contest and then they will play at Hamilton at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Hamilton is ranked 13th in the USCO.com poll and 10th in the D3Hoocley.com rankings.
