Trey Meyer & Matt Micheli Earn 2nd Seed at National Small College Championships
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Williams College's top men's doubles tandem of senior Trey Meyer and junior Matt Micheli will head to the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama, this weekend for the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
The event is scheduled to be played October 11-14 and could include a berth in the Super Bowl competition following the Division III tourney.
Meyer and Micheli earned a berth in Mobile event by virtue of their championship at the USTA/ITA New England Regional that was played on the Torrence M. Hunt Tournament Courts at Williams in September.
This will be Meyer's second consecutive trip to the National Small College Championships as a year ago he teamed with classmate Bryan Chow and that duo won the Division III title. Meyer and Chow then advanced to the finals of the Super Bowl competition where they were defeated in the finals by the Division II titlists.
Micheli is making his first appearance in the Division III National Small College Championships.
Thus far the Eph duo has compiled a record of 6-0 this fall with five of the wins coming at the USTA/ITA New England Regional and one win came in the Ephs' lone dual match of the fall at Wesleyan.
Commenting on his newly formed, but highly successful duo, head coach Dan Greenberg said, "Trey and Matt communicate well, have a lot of firepower, and are able to step up in the big points. They've only played together for about a week and a half, but they've obviously clicked. That said; there are a few things they can really focus on to improve, and they're doing that work this week. I think they'll bring a lot of energy to their matches and dig in to win. They want to do well and are focused on ending the fall on a high note."
In the opening round on Thursday at 1:00 PM the Eph pair will be matched up against Hunter Lathrop and Raul Smego of Drew University.
The men's Division III semifinal round is scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 PM and the finals will be played on Friday at 5:00 PM.
