Micheli and Meyer Crown the Title Decisively at National Small College Doubles Championships
MOBILE, AL -- Williams College tandem Matt Micheli and Trey Meyer won the Division III doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships advancing by Whitman College duo Andreww Le Cava and James Rivers 7-6 (6), 6-3. This has been Williams' second consecutive win, following the victory of Brian Chow and Trey Meyer in 2011.
The first set was closely contested at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center, both teams not getting an edge over each other. The twelve point tiebreaker determined the winner of the set, Micheli and Meyer stepping up to win the set just before it's too late with a narrow 8-6 victory.
The rest was relatively calmer for the Ephs and a decisive 6-3 set brought the title to Micheli and Meyer. "Whitman played very tough," spoke Williams College men's tennis coach Dan Greenberg, "but we hung around, made a few adjustments, and finished strong."
A special note on Trey Meyer, who won the title for the second year in a row, his coach commented on his success: "For Trey to win this two years in a row is a real accomplishment and testament to his drive." Micheli's performance was simply "awesome," as Greenberg described, "the way Matt stepped up in the semis and the final was extraordinary." Overall, coach Greenberg was elated about his players' performance for the last two days: "they really earned it."
Micheli and Meyer will compete on Saturday and Sunday to become the "Super Bowl" champions along with the winners from other divisions. The "Super Bowl" champions will earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
