MOBILE, AL -- On October 11th, Williams College men's tennis duo Matt Micheli and Trey Meyer went to Mobile, Alabama to compete at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championship after winning the title at the Regionals. Williams College players have won the national title twice in the history of the tournament, in 1996 and 2011. Micheli and Meyer are going to challenge for Williams' third title and try to bring it to Williamstown for the second consecutive time, after the victory of Bryan Chow and Richard Meyer.
Micheli and Meyer were seeded secpnd and in the first round they were drawn against Hunter Lathrop and Raul Smego from Drew University. The Eph tandem downed Lathrop and Smego in a tightly contested match, 6-2, 7-6 (3). "We played a little tentative," said Eph head coach Dan Greenberg on his players' performance. "Drew played a smart second set," he remarked, "so we were glad to pull that out."
Later on the day, Micheli and Meyer were put to another test at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center against Wood and Dorn of CMS when they lost the first set 1-6 in the semi-final. However Ephs did not give in as they went on to win the last two sets 6-3 and 10-4. "We lost a few good opportunities early," said Greenberg on the performance Micheli and Meyer displayed on the court, "but we stepped up in the second set and turned the match around."
Coach Greenberg was pleased overall with his players: "Trey and Matt really fought, I'm excited for the final!"
Micheli and Meyer will play Whitman's #4 seed Andrew Le Cava/James Rivers on Friday at 5:00 pm for the doubles title. Le Cava and Rivers beat Isaacs and Szczurek from Emory in the first round and Brown and Lim from Johns Hopkins in the semi-final. The winner will compete for the "Super Bowl" title along with other singles and doubles champions from other divisional levels.
