Men's Tennis Beats Hardin-Simmons, Falls to #6 Cal-Lutheran
THOUSAND OAKS, CA-- The Williams men's tennis team finished a busy Wednesday 1-1 after a 9-0 win over Hardin-Simmons and a 5-4 loss to Cal Lutheran.
Williams won all three doubles matches against Hardin-Simmons and cruised in singles play. No Eph lost more than two games in a set.
Cal-Lutheran was the highest ranked opponent the Ephs have faced early in this spring season, and the match was competitive from the get-go. Cal-Lutheran and Williams each picked up 8-3 wins in doubles play, with the Ephs' win coming from the number three pair of Bryan Chow and Brian Astrachan. Marcelo Sousa and Thomas Millet gave Cal-Lutheran a 2-1 lead after doubles with a 9-7 win over Matt Micheli and Felix Sun.
Williams showcased their depth in singles play with wins at the four, five and six spots. Bryan Chow and Howard Weiss earned straight set wins at numbers five and six, respectively. Matt Micheli also won his match in straight sets, but had to work incredibly hard to do so. Both of Micheli's sets went to tie-breaks, which he won 10-3 and 10-4.
"We always have tough matches against Cal-Lutheran and today they took it," commented head coach Dan Greenberg. "They started strong in singles and doubles but I think we'll get better at that with more matches."
Williams will have plenty of opportunity to gain experience in the coming days, as they will play six matches before returning east. Next up is Redlands on Saturday.
