MIDDLEBURY, VT – Day one of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships have come to a close seeing three doubles pairs from Williams advancing to the second round and three singles players advancing to the round of 16.
In doubles, Matt Micheli and Conrad Harron, seeded third, defeated the pair of Reiffler/Ferreyros (TRIN) 8-1 to earn their spot. They will play Wang/Oh (MIT) in the next round. Raventos/Shastri punched their ticket to the second round after upsetting the seeded pair of Zhang/Wu from MIT 8-5. Finally, Schidlousky/Astrachan also pulled off an upset today, as they defeated 4th seeded pair of Savage/Trinka (BOW). Coach Dan Greenberg was optimistic about the cohesiveness of the doubles pairs as, "they are starting to come together".
On the singles end, Howie Weiss, Conrad Harron and Alex Schidlovsky will all be playing in the round of 16 tomorrow. Weiss is the only seeded Williams player left, but Schidlovsky earned his spot by defeating seeded player Myles Tang of Amherst. Harron also defeated a seeded player, as he took down 7th seed Jay Glickman in the first round (6-3, 7-5). The number one seeded Fritz, of Amherst, is still in the tournament along with the 3rd, 5th and 8th seed.
Coach Dan Greenberg, looking forward to tomorrow said, "I thought we had a good day overall. I wasn't thrilled with our third sets but all the matches were well-fought, so definitely got in a lot of quality tennis."
