BENNINGTON, VT – Number two-seeded Middlebury (18-2) and sixth-seeded Williams (13-7) met in a NESCAC Tournament semifinal match this morning in the Bennington Tennis Center.

Unlike the regular season match when the Ephs swept the doubles, today the Middlebury Panthers took a 2-1 lead into singles play winning at #1 doubles and #3 doubles. When the two teams met on April 8 in Middlebury the Panthers emerged with a 5-4 victory when Middlebury won five singles matches in straight sets.

At #1 doubles the Panthers' Lubomir Cuba and William de Quant topped the Eph duo of Brian Grodecki and Alex Taylor, 8-4.

Williams won at #2 doubles to tie the match at one when the pairing of Rohan Shastri and Jordan Sadowsky prevailed over Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger, 8-2.

The deciding point in doubles play was captured by the Middlebury tandem of Timo van der Geest and Peter Martin at #3. The Panther tandem defeated the Eph pairing of Sachin Raghaven and Ben Lebowitz, 8-4.

A win at three singles by the Ephs' Sachin Raghavan tied the match at two all. Raghavan won over Hamid Derbani in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Next off the court with a win was Middlebury's #2 singles player William de Quant. de Quant defeated the Ephs' Brian Grodecki in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead and forcing the Ephs to have to win three of the four remaining singles matches.

Shortly after de Quant walked off the court the Ephs' Ananth Raghavan notched a three-set win at #5, downing the Panthers' Timo van de Geest, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to even the match at three.

Middlebury's #1 player Lubomir Cuba downed the Ephs' Rohan Shastri in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to put the Panthers on the doorstep of victory. As the Shastri match ended the Panthers' Kyle Schlanger at #4 was holding a one set lead and 3-0 lead in the second set over the Ephs' Deepak Indrkanti.

Schlanger delivered the fifth and final point needed by the Panthers, downing Indrakanti in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

"We played really solid throughout singles and doubles. Middlebury is a  great team and we were right there the entire match, so I feel good about how we're competing and the progress we're making. It was a good weekend--hoping we have more to come!"

With the win the Panthers advance to tomorrow's NESCAC Championship match, where they will play fourth seeded Bowdoin.
