MIDDLEBURY, VT – The third and final day of the 2017 ITA New England Regional Championships concluded today with finals in both singles and doubles categories.  Match play began at 9:00 am with the doubles' semifinals.

Moving in to the final day, the Ephs' still had one remaining pair vying for victory in doubles play.  Alex Taylor '20 and Brian Grodecki '18 were seeded number two and had steadily moved through competitors in the first three rounds of play.  Today, they faced off against three seed Luke Tercek '18 and Grant Erken '19 from Bowdoin in the fourth round.  After a tough fought battle, the Eph tandem conceded an 8-6 loss to their opponents.  Tercek and Erken would go on to defeat a Middlebury duo 6-4, 6-3 and win the doubles portion of the tournament.

The conclusion of singles play ended more successfully for the remaining Williams' competitors.  After an improbable turn of events resulted in Grodecki and Austin Barr '21 facing off in the semifinals, Grodecki edged out his teammate in a very close match with a score of 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4.  This bittersweet victory, was followed by a finals match up against Wesleyan University's Andrew Finkelman '21.  A decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory earned Grodecki a win and the title of champion for the singles division. By virtue of his victory Grodecki earns All-America singles honors.

Head Coach Dan Greenberg commented on the tournament: "Awesome weekend for the entire team, and especially proud of Brian for taking the singles title.  He's worked so hard these last three years, so he's definitely earned this accomplishment.  And Barr made him earn it even more, pushing him to a three-hour semifinal before the final! Couldn't be more excited for this group."

With the conclusion of the ITA New England Regional Championships, the Ephs only have one more opportunity for competition in the abbreviated season.  The MIT Invite, beginning on October 13th, will feature both singles and doubles play and will round out a successful fall.
