Cambridge, MA––The men's track and field team finished their final competition before the NCAA Championship next week. This meet served as the final opportunity for Division III athletes to hit qualifying marks (top 20 in the nation) for NCAAs.
Co-Captain Steven Yannacone '17 was the lone Williams competitor in the meet, competing in the 800 meters. Yannacone, last spring an All-American performer with an 8th place finish at NCAAs, came in to the meet with a seasonal best of 1:52.83, about 1 second slower than the mark needed to qualify. The race was fast from the gun, and Yannacone mixed it up well with the leaders, finishing with his trademark grit in 3rd, with a time of 1:52.11, a seasonal best by well over half a second. The mark places Yannacone 28th in all of Division III. While some athletes ahead of Yannacone in the standings may not declare for the 800m at nationals, this race was likely his last for the Ephs.
The Ephs will next compete at the NCAA Championship, held at the SPIRE institute in in Geneva, Ohio. Williams will likely be represented by co-captain Tobias Muellers '18 and Tommy Riley '18 in the decathlon, first-year Magnus Herweyer '20 in the shot put, and co-captain Peter Hale '17 in the 5000m.
