Williamstown, MA -- Williams junior Margo Beck hit a two-out, three-run, opposite-field home run in the fourth inning Saturday, spurring the Williams College softball team to a 6-1 victory over The College of Staten Island and into the championship round of the 2017 Div. III NCAA Tournament Williamstown Regional at Cole Field.
Beck's blast erased a 1-0 Staten Island lead. The Ephs added three runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Dolphins and improve to 33-10 on the season. Staten Island fell to 35-8 and faced either Thomas (Me.) College or RPI in an elimination game later Saturday.
Lexi Curt ignited the Ephs' fourth-inning rally with a one-out double to right center field. After a strikeout, Rebecca Duncan rifled a single to right field. Beck followed with a deep blast to right field that cleared the fence for a three-run homer and a two-run Williams lead.
The Ephs added three runs in the sixth. Curt drew a lead-off walk and went to third when Mackenzie Murphy's grounder resulted in a two-base error. Duncan followed with a two-run double to right and she scored when Brenna Martinez sizzled a two-out RBI-single back up the middle for a 6-1 lead.
Murphy took care of the rest, scattering three hits over a complete-game, seven-inning effort in which she walked no one and struck out three while improving to 11-4 on the season.
Staten Island scored its lone run in the second when Kristy Colangelo led off the frame with a single and, one out later, scored from first when Jamie Holmes drilled a shot into the right-center field gap that went for a RBI-double.
Remarkably, after Holmes' double, Murphy retired the final 17 batters she faced covering the last 5 1/3 innings.
Williams finished with seven hits. Duncan was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
