Williams Defeats Springfield 9-2
SPRINGFIELD, MA—Williams lacrosse (2-0) continued their strong start to the 2013 season on Tuesday, earning a 9-2 win over Springfield College (4-1). Once again the Ephs came back from an early deficit to take home the victory.
Springfield was first on the scoreboard as Connie Nielson converted on a free position opportunity at 26:26 in the first half. Adding to her team's lead, Michelle Dorsey found the back of the net at 18:17 to give Springfield a two goal advantage over Williams.
After a draw control and forced turnover, Williams found its footing with a goal by senior captain Sam Weinstein (Marblehead, MA) at 17:32. This goal started a scoring run for the Ephs who tied the game at 14:19 with a goal by Nancy Palmer (Lakeville, CT) off an assist by Rebecca McGovern (Weymouth, MA). The Ephs went on to score two more goals in the first half, one from Emily Whicker (5:09) and another from Bridget Malicki (2:31).
The Eph scoring dominance to end the first half continued after the break. Rebecca McGovern tallied a quick, unassisted goal at 28:54 to start the second half. Williams went on to score four more unanswered goals to end the game. Weinstein (17:26), McGovern (15:46), Palmer (12:42) and Whicker (4:09) all added another goal for the Ephs. Rebecca McGovern added three assists to her two-goal tally for the day.
Williams led Springfield in shots (33-12), ground balls (17-15), draw controls (8-5) and turnovers (18-30). Williams goalie Ali Piltch (Bryn Mawr, PA) had 6 saves on the day and Anne Versprille had 14 stops for Springfield.
The Ephs will travel to Hartford to play Trinity on Saturday before departing for their spring training trip.
