Ephs fall to Panthers 16-5

MIDDLEBURY, VT—Williams Women's Lacrosse (8-7, 3-7 NESCAC) fell to Middlebury (13-1, 9-1 NESCAC) on Wednesday 16-5. Middlebury used their aggressive offense early in the first half to jump out to a 5-0 lead that propelled the Panthers to victory.

Williams and Middlebury played an even game for the first fifteen minutes of the half. The Panthers were first on the scoreboard after Margaret Souther converted on a free position shot at 15:23. Katie Ritter added another free position goals for the Panthers (12:43) to start a 90 second scoring blitz for Middlebury. Liza Herzog added a goal for the Panthers at 12:14 off an assist by Ellen Halle. Just 30 seconds later Halle found Laurel Pascal for a goal at 11:47. Halle added her own goal at 11:28 to bring the Middlebury lead to 5-0 over the Ephs.

Williams junior Becca McGovern (Weymouth, MA) interrupted the Panthers' scoring run with an unassisted goal at 10:28. Middlebury three more goals in the half: Margaret Souther (7:02 and 0:05) and Laurel Pascal (3:04) netted goals for the Panthers. Williams scored once more with a goal by Stephanie Gallo (0:51). The half ended with Middlebury leading the Ephs 8-2.

Middlebury came out strong again in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals. Halle scored off an assist by Katie Ritter at 26:34 and then went on to assist Liza Herzog for a goal at 17:53. Bridget Malicki responded with an unassisted goal at 15:03. Hillary Cook and Nancy Palmer netter goals for the Ephs as well. The Panthers and the Ephs exchanged goals before Middlebury ended the half with a three-goal run to finish the game with a score of 16-5.

Middlebury and Williams were evenly matched on turnovers, ground balls and draw controls. The Panthers led the Ephs in shots 35-18. Middlebury goalie Alyssa Palomba had 7 saves and Katie Mandigo stopped 2. Ali Piltch had 11 saves for the Ephs.
