Women's Tennis Tops Nova Southeastern
FT. LAUDERDALE -- The Williams women's tennis team (10-1) concluded their busy spring break trip Thursday with a 7-2 win over #18 Nova Southeastern (NCAA Division II).
The Ephs went 6-1 on their southern trip playing seven matches against nationally ranked teams in NCAA Division II and III, The loss came at the hands of Lynn Univeristy, ranked third nationally in Division II
The number one doubles team of Kara Shoemaker and Taylor French earned a hard-fought point out of their match, taking their proset 9-8 (3). Kathleen Elkins and Kristin Alotta had an easier time of it, taking their set 8-3, to give Williams a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Williams elevated their play yet again during the singles session, taking five of the six matches. Kristin Alotta had a tidy 6-3, 6-2 victory at the one spot. Kara Shoemaker worked hard to take her first set 7-5 and cruised home with a 6-3 victory in the second. Caroline Capute's match had a similar make-up. Capute won her first set in a tiebreak before taking her second 6-3 as well.
Nancy Worley and Kathleen Elkins had smooth, straight set victories to round out the contest.
"Our spring break trip was a great competitive experience for us. The team feels very good about where we are right now, but we're also hungry to keep working hard and improving in the weeks ahead," commented head coach Alison Swain.
Williams returns to Massachusetts tomorrow, and will take on arch-rival Amherst on Sunday at home. While contests with Amherst carry extra weight across Williams athletics, the women's tennis rivalry is particularly heated due to recent history.
Williams won 6-3 at Amherst in the fall.
The last spring meeting between the two rivals came in last year's NCAA Championship match, which Williams took 5-4.
Sunday's match is set for 1:00.
