WILLIAMSTOWN -- After a rainy Saturday, and a beautiful Sunday, this weekend's Lindsay Morehouse Invitational kicked off the Women's Tennis fall campaign. The invitational featured teams from Bowdoin, Middlebury, Skidmore and Vassar and crowned no overall winner; instead its purpose was to emphasize participation and sportsmanship to mark the beginning of the Women's Tennis fall season.
Doubles play concluded Saturday, with notably strong showings from Bowdoin teams of Chow/Lavertu and Alberstone/Cheng who played aggressive doubles and both went 2-1 on the weekend against the top teams at the Invitational. Also in the A Flight, the Eph pairing of Shoemaker/Curran had an impressive weekend, not dropping a match, going 3-0. Vassar played 5 new doubles teams this weekend, and are excited about the promise and level of play exhibited this weekend.
Three rounds of singles were played today – some indoors due to rainy weather yesterday. Highlights in singles play include Skidmore's Caroline Hobbs getting her first college singles wins. She went 2-2 on the weekend, defeating players from Vassar on both occasions. On Vassar's end, Ava Sadeghi went 2-2 against the top singles players competing this weekend. Vassar's coaches, however, emphasized the depth of their team this year, believing it will be a key factor in the coming season. Williams singles players Pylypiv, Pastor and Worley also had strong singles showings going 3-0, 3-0, and 4-0 respectively. Middlebury rounded off the highlights of singles play with Dorrie Paradies and Lok Sze Leung both going 4-0 this weekend.
Looking forward to the rest of the season, Coach Alison Swain remarked, "I'm excited about the depth the team showed. It's clear that the returning players worked hard over the summer and the freshmen came in with a lot of enthusiasm and energy on the court. We are in a good place already, and are set to start working on the tactical aspects of our game as we prepare for the upcoming season."
Next, Williams will be travelling to Wellesley on September 23rd.
