Tartans counter strong Eagles doubles performance, 5-2, to book spot in Sunday's NCAA Regional Final

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University and Eagles of the University of Mary Washington faced off on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Both sides managed 5-0 wins in their first-round duals on Friday against their respective opponents, but neither team found it as easy in the second round on Saturday, when they were forced indoors to the Lansing-Chapman Rink.

Though trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion of the dual, the tenth-ranked Tartans rallied in singles, winning all of the first four matches on the courts to overcome the fifteenth-ranked Eagles 5-2, securing their spot in Sunday's regional final against hosts, Williams College.

The Tartans struggled in doubles, suffering losses on both Court 1 and Court 2 after taking the first point of the dual on Court 3.

Katie Lai and Jamie Vizelman recorded the Tartans' first point of the dual with their 8-2 win over Caroline Mosberg and Danielle on Court 3, but the Eagle pairings of Kait Brogan and Taylor Diffley and Ashley Barrow and Rachel Summers responded on Court 1 and Court 2 with wins of their own, 8-5 and 8-6 respectively, over Cori Sidell and Nicholle Torres and Vinaya Rao and Courtney Ollis.

The Eagles' 2-1 advantage swiftly evaporated once singles had begun, however, as Sidell quickly made amends for her doubles failure, avenging her 8-5 loss to Diffley with a straight-sets, 6-2, 6-0 win on Court 2.

Buoyed by their teammate's dominant performance, the other three matches on the courts at the time all also saw Tartan first-set wins, with Torres, Vizelman, and Rao all gaining the advantage over their respective opponents on Courts 1, 3, and 4 respectively.

Nevertheless, the Eagles began to recollect themselves and hit their singles stride in their second sets, gaining break advantages in two of the three matches, only to see them slip through their fingertips at the critical moment.

Though Rao trailed to Mosberg in the second set, the first-year came charging back to complete her straight sets victory and reestablish the Tartans' one-point advantage from much earlier in doubles, winning the second set, 7-5, after taking the first set, 6-4.

Shortly thereafter, the Tartans drew to within one point of clinching the match when Vizelman finished off Summers on Court 3 after a pair of 6-4 sets.

Then, finally, Torres delivered the finishing blow to the Eagles' hopes on Court 1, seeing off Brogan 7-5 in the second set, after the junior squandered a break advantage late in the second set.

With the win, the Tartans lock down the second spot in Sunday's Regional Final against the Ephs of Williams College. That match is set to get underway Sunday at 1 PM EDT.
