Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season With 9-0 Win Over Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Eph women's tennis team (2-0) kicked off the spring portion of their season with a win over No. 20 Skidmore College today, blanking the Thoroughbreds 9-0. Skidmore entered the match with a 5-1 record, while the Ephs had won their only dual match of the Fall season with a 7-2 win over Amherst College. Skidmore was voted the favorite to win the Liberty League in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches.  

"Kudos to Skidmore," said Ephs head coach Anik Cepeda following the conclusion of play Saturday, "They showed up on every court and fought hard from start to finish."

Seniors Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio paired up in the first doubles match of the day, overcoming Skidmore's Risa Fukushige, a first-year, and Ada Wiggins, a sophomore, by a score of 8-5. Chloe Henderson '20 and Rachel Cross '21 overcame their opponents 8-2, while Giulia McDonnel Nieto del Rio '18 and Emily Zheng '20 completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory. Mia Gancayco '18 and Korina Neveux '19 teamed up in an exhibition doubles match, earning an 8-3 victory.

In singles, Raventos, Cross, Henderson, Gancayco, Cancio, and Neveux all secured victories. For Raventos, this came in the form of straight 6-2, 6-2 sets. After winning her first set 6-1, Cross battled to a 7-5 finish in the second set for the win. Henderson dropped the first set by a score of 2-6 before bouncing back 6-3 in the second and earning the victory 10-8 in the final set. Gancayco overcame her opponent 6-2, 6-0 while fellow senior Cancio swept her second set 6-0 after battling to a 7-6(4) victory in the first. Neveux completed the 9-0 day with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Skidmore's Jackie Ahn, a first-year. In an exhibition singles match Sasha Cayward '21 saw her first action of the spring, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

"We were resilient during challenging moments within points, games, and sets," said Cepeda. "It was clear we were excited to play for one another today. Looking forward to this final week of practice before Spring Break!"

Next week the Ephs will practice on campus before heading to California over Spring Break. On the west coast the Ephs will square off against Southwestern (Tex.) on March 18th in at the University of Southern Califonria Tennis Center. Play is set to begin 1:00 PM EST. Then, the Ephs will face Azusa Pacific on March 19th at 4:30 EST. The first home match of the spring campaign will come against Middlebury on April 7th at 1:00 PM.
