AZUSA, CALIFORNIA -- In their second match on the west coast and fourth match overall the Williams women's team (4-0) took on Azusa Pacific University (10-5) and the Ephs prevailed in a battle, 5-4.

An NCAA DII school Azusa Pacific University ranked 9th had already claimed wins over NCAA DI teams from Bowling Green University and Lehigh University this year.

With the match 4-3 in the Ephs' favor both senior Juli Raventos at #1 singles and first year Rachel Cross at #2 were down 4-3 in the third set. Raventos lost her third set to Toby Miclat 6-3, but Rachel Cross won three straight games to claim a 6-4 win and clinch the match for Williams. Cross had dropped her first set, but showed composure in coming back to win the last two sets.

"First off, congrats to Azusa Pacific and their coaching staff for a well fought match today," said Eph head coach Anik Cepeda. "We came out receptive in the doubles and carried ourselves with poise from start to finish. That set us up nicely to battle in the singles. Whether we were up a set, down a set, or all tied up I thought we controlled the controlables very well. Tough points didn't weigh on us or carry over. This was a huge win and confidence boost - across the board we can count on one another to fight regardless of the circumstances. It was also fun to see Rachel clinch her first 5-4 match of her career!"

Four of the six singles matches went three sets. Seniors Mia Gancaycoo #5 and Julia Cancio at #6 posted wins. Gancayco won in straight sets over Jackie Resler 6-3, 6-3, while Cancio had to go three sets to down Mikayla Rinker 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Williams won two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The senor pairing of Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio won at #1 8-2 and sophomore Chloe Henderson and Rachel Cross prevailed 8-6 at #2.

Next up for the Ephs will be a match on March 23 against the University of Chicago in Claremont, Calif. The match versus the Maroons will commence at 9:00 AM PST.
