Ephs Lead Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings After Winter Season

CLEVELAND, OH – The Williams College Ephs scored in seven of 10 sports at NCAA winter championships to accumulate 428.25 points and take over the lead in the NCAA Division III Learfield Directors' Cup standings.

Williams' 743.25 points at the end of the winner is 36.25 points ahead of second pace Washington-St. Louis (707.00). This marks the third time in the last four years that the Ephs have led in the Directors' Cup after the winter season and in each of the three previous years Williams went on to win the Cup.

In the final fall standings in the NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition Williams was tied for second place with Calvin College (MI) with 315 points.

Washington-St. Louis was in first place 22.5 points ahead of Calvin and Williams with 337.5 points. The Wash U. Bears scored in five fall sports, as did Calvin and the Ephs scored in four sports.

In the winter season the Ephs scored in three men's sports, three women's sports and one co-ed sport, skiing, which can be counted as either a male or female sport.

Calvin is now in 16th place with 432.75 points.

Points are awarded in the Learfield Directors' Cup competition based on team finishes at NCAA Championships. Each school can score in a maximum of nine men's and nine women's sports.

This winter the Ephs had four teams finish in the top seven in the nation. Women's swimming & diving posted the highest team finish (3rd), followed by men's ice hockey (5th), men's swimming & diving (6th), and men's track and field (7th).

Rounding out the Eph winter scoring teams was skiing (14th), wrestling (27th) and women's track and field (28th). The Ephs averaged 61.2 points per team during the winter campaign.

The NESCAC led all conferences with four teams in the top 10, three in the top five, and five in the top 15: Williams (1), Amherst (3), Tufts (4), Middlebury (9), and Bowdoin (15).
