Williamstown, MA—The Williams College
field hockey team beat archrival Amherst for the second time this
weekend, to advance in the NESCAC playoffs. The 4th-seeded Ephs
dropped the 5th-seeded Jeffs, 3-1, in this afternoon's first round
match up.
The first half was a battle for possession when Williams forward,
Anne de Saint Phalle, scored the first goal of the game with 2:29
left, assisted by Meighan McGowan.
McGowan then scored off the penalty corner from Rebecca Gilbert
with 10:24 left in the 2nd half. Cary Bearn scored with 6:45 left
in the game, putting the Ephs up, 3-0.
Amherst's Catherine Calvert scored with 5:12 left in the game
bringing the final score to 3-1. The Jeffs pulled their goalie,
Kathleen Boucher, with 1:30 left in the game, but were unable to
score.
Bethany Baker played in goal for the Ephs, making 2 saves, while
Boucher made 6 saves for the Jeffs. Williams had 9 penalty corners
to Amherst's 6, and the Ephs out shot the Jeffs, 11-6.
Last year, Williams played Amherst as their last game of the
regular season, then in their first game of playoffs on the next
day, just like this weekend. The Ephs beat Amherst in their last
regular season game a year ago, but unfortunately lost to the Jeffs
the very next day in playoffs. Head coach, Alix Rorke, was
extremely pleased that this trend did not continue, "I was totally
nervous knowing what happened last year and how the game can
change, especially with our long time rivalry", said Rorke.
Rorke was also proud of the leadership put forth by the seniors in
today's contest, "My 3 seniors put us back in this game and kept
the team alive," said coach Rorke.
Williams advances in the tournament and will play against top
seeded Bowdoin College on 11/3/07 at 11 am, at Bowdoin.
