Plattsburgh, NY -- The Williams women's hockey team (0-2-0)
rallied fervently in the third period against tournament host and
#2-ranked Plattsburgh (5-1-0), but it was not enough to overcome a
four-goal deficit as the Ephs were defeated 4-2 in Round One of the
Panther/Cardinal Classic.
A first period power-play goal netted by Plattsburgh's Claire
O'Connor (10:20) opened the scoring, and the Cardinals would follow
up with three additional unanswered goals in the second
period. A power-play goal by Laura Bowler (3:49) and the
game-winning goal scored by Vanessa Worz (4:45) came within a
minute of each other.
"Plattsburgh is a big, strong team that handles the puck well,"
commented Ephs head coach Shannon Bryant. "I think we played
a strong game against a very strong opponent, but it wasn't quite
enough to take the victory."
The squad finally lit the red light early in the final period
with an even-strength goal by junior Tracy Ferriter (2:59).
An aggresive offensive attack yielded only one other goal for
Williams in the final minute as junior Kait O'Brien (19:24) put one
home. Ferriter also had an assist on that goal, finishing
with a +2 rating, along with O'Brien, and freshmen Hannah Systrom
and Eliza Foster.
"Kait and Tracy both played really well tonight," praised
Bryant. "I was also proud of the Sara Plunkett played,
stopping 30 shots.
"We played a good game despite the loss, and we will have to
stay positive for tomorrow's game against another very tough
opponent in Elmira."
The Ephs will face-off against Elmira, another top-ranked school
in the consolation game of the tournament. Puck drops at
12pm.
