AMHERST, Mass - In their regular season finale against archrival
Amherst, the Williams College men's hockey battled the #12 ranked
Lord Jeffs to a stalemate through two periods before surrendering
six third period scores to the host team and falling 6-0 Saturday.
The Ephs have now lost four of their last seven, including two
straight, as they enter the postseason with a 14-8-2 (12-5-2
Conference) record and the #3 seed in the NESCAC Tournament.
Amherst, having already secured the #1 spot, extended its winning
streak to ten games and ends the regular season 18-4-1 (16-2-1
Conference).
While the late slide is not how any team hopes to enter the
postseason, today's game showed that the Ephs are capable of
skating with the Lord Jeffs, who just edged Williams in shot
production (Williams: 29; Amherst: 33), at least for two periods.
The late surge by Amherst, wherein they notched six scores of
off 14 shots, was precipitated by an Eph dominated 2nd
period where they recorded 16 shots to the Lord Jeffs 7, but simply
couldn't finish. Amherst goaltender Jonathon La Rose (29 saves) was
a big reason for that, as he came with several big stops to
preserve the stalemate in the second stanza.
However, Amherst did take advantage of their opportunities in
the finale period as they exploded for four scores in the first
7:53 of the period to take the lead. The Lord Jeffs would add an
additional two scores before the game was through to finalize the
scoring at 6-0.
Amherst notched three power play goals in their late run to help
fuel the victory.
Williams will look to extend their season as they play host to
Bowdoin in the first round of the NESCAC tournament next Saturday,
February 28th. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 PM
start.
