Front Row View of the Match
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- In a battle of banged up New England wrestling powers the Springfield College Pride vanquished the Ephs 19-15.
Williams College, ranked 3rd in New England, knew Springfield College, ranked 1st, would be a difficult task. This challenge was compounded by the fact that the Ephs were without two of their top wrestlers, Ces Antista and Ryan Malo both of whom are ranked first in New England. Despite their best efforts the Ephs were unable to overcome this challenge and were narrowly defeated.
The match got of to a promising start with Josh Mattana and Kaison Tanabe earning victories. The Ephs entered the 149 match between Corey Paulish and Ryan McGilvray, the 1st and 3rd ranked wrestlers in New England respectively, with a three point cushion. Paulish controlled the entire match and blanked McGilvray 4-0. The next match was an exciting battle between Darius Charles and Steve Flathers. Charles found himself trailing with seconds left in the match but was able to secure a key escape to force overtime. Unfortunately for Williams, Flathers was able to regain his composure and defeated Charles 7-5 in sudden victory overtime.
On almost any other day the aforementioned match would have been the most exciting duel, however the 174 pound match between Kyle Martin and Brandon Sundwall was truly phenomenal. Martin found himself trailing by a point with time running out on the match. Instead of quitting he made a great move and was able to secure a take down as time expired. This earned Martin a 6-5 victory and a standing ovation from the Williams bench.
Springfield went on to win two of the last three matches and won the match 19-15.
The Ephs return to the mats on Sunday January 23rd at the NEWA Dual Meet tournament. The Tournament will be held at Bridgewater State University. Competition is set to begin at 10am.
