Ephs down Conn. College in 3-0 NESCAC victory

NEW LONDON, Conn.  After a tough loss on the road yesterday versus Tufts, the Williams Ephs bounced back to shutout Connecticut College, 3-0, Sunday afternoon elevating their record to 5-6, 2-5 in NESCAC and dropping the Camels to 6-6, 2-6 record in NESCAC.  Sophomore Eph Betsy Hart (New Canaan, Conn.) grabbed the game winning goal in the first frame and teammates Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, Mass.) and Katie Jolin (Guilford, Conn.) each followed in the second tacking on two more goals to lift the Ephs to a 3-0 advantage that would remain until the final buzzer.

In the first half, Conn. College led the way in penalty corners 6 to 1, but the Ephs edged the Camels in shots, 5-4.  With ten minutes remaining in the period, Williams made a 3 on 1 break for goal that successfully resulted in a goal for the Ephs at 26:03 after Hart found the back of the net off an assist by sophomore teammate Emily Jablonski (Madison, Conn.).

Momentum from the first converted into the second frame as the Ephs scored again less than 5 minutes into the period when Jolin assisted on a goal made by Conlon at 39:32.  With less than 5 minutes remaining Jonlin made good on a shot attempt of her own off Jablonski's second assist of the afternoon.  The Ephs maintained a penalty corner and shot advantage over Conn. College for the frame tallying 5 to 3 and 6 to 3 respectively.

Sophomore Eph net-minder Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) tallied 6 saves for the night and allowed no goals, while Camel goalie Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) had 7 saves and 3 goals allowed.  Each spent the full 70 minutes in goal.

Head coach Alix Burrale commented on the game, "Today we really played well together by controlling the tempo and finishing well.  Beginning to end we did our job and we did it well.  Ariana had a really great night in goal, but overall I couldn't be happier with our cohesive team effort."

Both teams will continue to fight for one of the final spots in the 2011 NESCAC Championship Tournament and Williams will return home to host Hamilton College this Wednesday night at 6PM.
