Chiara Del Piccolo wins NCAA title, women place third

OSHKOSH, WI -- The women's cross country team placed third at the NCAA Championship Meet with a total of 153 points. Washington University won the meet with 70 points and Middlebury finished second with 111 points. The fourth placed team, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, totaled 223 points. For team points, the Ephs placed 1-21-29-50-52-(60)-(74). The overall places differ due to individual runners in the competition. There were a total of 32 scoring teams and 277 individual runners. 

Chiara Del Piccolo '14 won the 6k in 20:52.08 against top-notch competition, including Christy Cazzola of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Annie Lydens of Pomona-Pitzer. Del Piccolo came through the one mile in 5:33 in fourth and stayed in that position through the second mile. Through the third mile, she moved into second, just behind Cazzola, and broke away in the end to finish 5 seconds ahead. This is the second time in Williams history that an Eph has won the national title, with the first time being by Jessica Caley in 1995.  

Finishing next for the Ephs was Alison Smith '15, with a time of 21:42 for 33rd place overall. Smith was able to keep a steady place of about 5:45 thorughout the race. Both Smith and Del Piccolo earned All-American honors. Olivia Delia '12 finished 43rd overall, after moving up from 119th through the first mile. Delia continued moving up smoothy - to 88th through the second mile and 67th thorugh the third mile - to put her in position for a big finish. Celeste Berg '13 placed 75th overall and Shayna Barbash '14 was close behind in 79th, rounding out the top five. Lauren Goldtein-Kral '12 finshed in 89th and Anna Spiers '15 placed 110th overall. While not refected in the team score, Williams placed 7 runners before any other team in Division III.
