Williamstown, Mass.-- In their opening meet of the 2011 season
the Williams Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated the visiting
Union College Dutchmen 227-73.
For the Ephs junior Paul Dyrkacz
was the star, placing first in both the 200 yd breaststroke
(2:06.81), and the 200 yd freestyle (1:44.20) while also swimming
on two victorious relay teams, the 400 yd medley relay and the 200
yd freestyle relay. For the Dutchmen Timothy Boncek won the 100 yd
butterfly (54.31) while placing third in the 400 yd IM and fourth
in the 200 yd butterfly.
Dyrkacz was followed in the 200 yd freestyle by teammate Chris
Weihs, a first year, and Zack Wahl from Union. In the 200 yd
breaststroke he was backed up by Williams senior Greg MacElroy
while Alex Boyd of Union took third. MacElroy
Had previously won the 100 yd breaststroke (1:01.43), just
outouching teammate Timothy Lattimer, a first year.
Another two event winner for the Ephs was junior Tom Vieth, who won
both the 500 yd freestyle (4:45.97) and the 50 yd freestyle
(21.97). The latter event was a Williams sweep, as first years Will Brown
and Alexader Nanda came in secnd and third respectively. In the 500
yd freestyle Williams junior John
Armstrong came in second while teammate Thad Ricotta, a
first year, placed third. Armstrong would pick up an event win of
his own in the 1000 yd freestyle, winning in a time of 9:55.96,
ahead of teammates Christian
Gronbeck and Adrien Downey,
both first years. Ricotta would notch his first collegiate win in
the 200 yd butterfly (1:57.03). Zack Wahl from Union would come in
second while Williams' Stuart Horgan,
a senior, came in third.
In the 100 yd backstroke Williams junior Philip Treesh
placed first (54.61) while Union's Michael Mooney came in second.
Junior Christopher Corbett from Williams came in third. Corbett
would place second in the 400 yd IM, an event won by Eph first year
Timothy Lattimer in a time of 4:17.46. Treesh also had an
impressive meet for Williams by also winning the 100 yd freestyle
(47.93), backed up by Chris Weihs, a first year. Matt Wahl of Union
broke up the Williams sweep by placing third just ahead of
sophomore Eric
Liao for the Ephs.
Junior David Taylor
from Williams led a triumphant charge for the home squad in the 200
yd backstroke as the hosts captured first through fourth place.
Behind Taylor's winning time of 1:58.07 followed first years Andrew
Nemeth, Christian Gronbeck, and Daniel Druckman.
In the diving events a deep and talented Williams squad was
challenged by Union's Ian Drillinger, who placed first in the 1 m
competition with a score of 301.72, ahead of Williams first year Rohan Bhatt
and senior Alex Long. Bhatt
would win the 3 m competition with a score of 288.15, followed by
Long and teammate Morgan
Stevens, a first year.
The Ephs will now look forward to their next home meet when they
host Division I foes Boston College and Fordham University on
December 3rd. Union will next travel to the Liberty League
Championship tournament at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on
December 2nd and 3rd.
