WILLIAMSTOWN-- The #10 Williams Mens' Squash team pulled off an impressive victory Saturday, after holding off #15 Navy.
Williams knew going in that their hands would be full with a scrappy Navy team that is much improved from last season.
Andy Maruca was the first Eph to get on the board, with a strong 3-1 victory at number 6. Aaron Seong and Nick Marks, the other two Williams players on court in the first round at numbers 9 and 3, respectively, lost, and the Ephs found themselves in a 2-1 hole after the first round.
Senior captain Alec Greaves-Tunnell played the role of the stopper for Williams, drawing the match even at 2-2. Jared Zuckerman played phenomenal squash at number 8, but would eventually lose in an intensely close five games. Kevin Chen played well at number 2 and drew the match even again, this time at 3-3.
The third round of matches commenced with Williams needing to take two of three to win. First-year Chris Wilkinson was first off court with a 3-0 win, but Taylor Foehl lost in four games. All eyes then turned to senior captain Will Morris. Morris lost his first game, but then won a close second game, before pulling away in the third and fourth games.
"I'm really pleased with the toughness that many of our players showed today. Navy is such a fit team, they're so hard to beat because they don't give you anything. I'm just happy we got out of there with a win," said head coach Zafi Levy.
Williams will travel for the first time this season next weekend, taking on Princeton Friday night and Penn Saturday morning. They'll then head to Trinity for their last match before winter break.
