CAMBRIDGE—The Williams Men's Squash team advanced to the "B" draw semi-finals by overcoming the Middlebury Panthers by a score of 8-1.
Williams ended their regular season against the Panthers two weeks ago in Middlebury, winning that contest by a score of 7-2. Senior co-captain Jeremy Herrmann, a loser in the February 13 match, rebounded to beat the same opponent in four games.
The Ephs got two five game wins from Will Morris at number one, and Nick Marks at four. Marks got off to a slow start and dropped the first two games. After a solid third, he found himself facing match ball against him 10-9. His gritty toughness prevailed, however, and he went on to win the game and the match.
Jack Ervasti, Alec Greaves-Tunnell, Will Gruner, and Jared Zuckerman all won in three games. Andy Maruca had the lone loss on the day in three incredibly close games.
"This was a great way to start off this huge weekend. The boys played really well across the board. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's match" commented head coach Zafi Levy.
The Ephs move on to meet the Penn Quakers, who beat Bates 7-2 to advance today, in the semi-finals on Saturday. Williams dropped a tightly contested 5-4 decision to the Quakers January 15 in Philadelphia. The winner will move on to play in the "B" draw finals Sunday, earning a final ranking of either 9th or 10th nationally. The match is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Harvard University's Murr Center.
