Williams Defeats Wesleyan University by Score of 2-0

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Williams College field hockey team (4-5, 2-4 NESCAC) downed NESCAC and Little Three foe, Wesleyan University (4-5) by a score of 2-0 today to claim their fourth win of the season.

Williams would take control of the ball early in the first half, keeping up the pressure offensively for the first few minutes of play.  Wesleyan would battle back however, pushing the ball into Williams' defensive end.  After a save by Eph goalie, Ariana Spiliotes, the momentum turned once again as Williams moved back into their offensive end to capitalize on a smooth transition.

Assisted by senior captain Emily Jablonski, Eph junior forward, Caitlin Conlon would score her first goal of the game to put Williams on the scoreboard.  Building off of their offensive success, Williams continued peppering Wesleyan with shots for the remainder of the half, taking seven shots overall to Wesleyan's four.  Wesleyan's defense remained strong for the remainder of the half, and the score stayed at 1-0.

The second half proved just as successful for the Ephs, taking control early and drawing penalty corners to keep the Cardinals on their toes.  At the 47:53 mark, Williams scored again off of a connection from Jablonski to Conlon.  "They were both beautiful goals," said Eph head coach Alix Barrale.  "We played really well today from end to end for all 70 minutes, and I was so glad to see that play finish with a goal."

Down by two goals, Wesleyan would take a timeout to try and recharge and change the momentum.  Although they would take three more shots before time would run out, none would connect with the back of the net.  Spiliotes would finish with two saves on the day, and Wesleyan goalie Sara Gundy would finish with nine.

The Ephs next take on NESCAC rival, Bowdoin College tomorrow in Brunswick, ME at 12:00 PM.
