Ephs Split Matches to Open Season

WILLIAMSTOWN--

The Williams men's squash team kicked off its 2013-2014 season with a win and a loss at the Simon Squash Center.

Williams began with the University of Western Ontario, who beat the Ephs in the "B" Division final last February. Ryan Eagan battled back from a 2-1 deficit to win at number 9, overcoming a 9-6 deficit in the fourth game. Kevin Chen was outstanding at number one, pulling out a five game win, also having trailed 2-1. Chen outlasted his opponent, who was the clear better of the two players when they faced off last year at nationals.

Andy Maruca and first year Jamie Ruggiero each jumped out to 1-0 leads but failed to maintain momentum. First year John Shuck also lost in four games, as did Chris Wilkinson.

After a short break, the Ephs were back on court with the Continentals. Despite the fatigue, Williams was able to put Hamilton on their heels from the start. Taylor Foehl, playing at number three, was the only Eph to surrender a game.

"I am a bit disappointed with our match against UWO, only because I know that we could have done better. A couple of our players have been injured or sick and not practicing fully, and others are not as fit as they need to be. The match was a good learning experience because we got to see where we are as a team right now," commented head coach Zafi Levy.

Williams will continue a busy opening weekend tomorrow when they face off against top five opponent University of Rochester at 2:30.

Individual results are unavailable at this time.
