WILLIAMSTOWN-- The Williams men's squash team completed its opening weekend 3-2, after a Saturday loss to Rochester and Sunday wins over Stanford and Tufts.
University of Rochester rolled into Williamstown Saturday as a National Championship contender, and turned in an impressive performance. Andy Maruca was the lone bright spot on the day for the Ephs, winning at the number 9 spot in four games.
Williams recovered well on Sunday, though, taking two matches by the score of 9-0. First up was the Stanford Cardinal, who travelled east for numerous matches in Williamstown. First year Andrew Chou, playing his first collegiate match, turned in an impressive 11-2, 11-0, 11-2 performance in the nine spot. Tyler Conroy lost his first game at number six, but recovered to take the last three games easily.
The Ephs kept things rolling immediately after the Stanford the match with a 9-0 win against Tufts. Williams' depth was on full display, as five members of the top nine sat out. Jack McLean got his first start as an Eph with a 3-0 win at number 9. Andrew Chou and Varun Sharma also filled in well at the bottom of the order, turning in 3-0 wins.
Williams will hit the road next weekend for three important matches. First up is perennial rival University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, followed by Drexel and Princeton on Sunday.
