Williamsport, PA – Today marked the second and final day of the 2014 Budd Whitehill National Duals hosted by Lycoming College. Over the course of the day, the Williams wrestlers took on Thiel College and Ohio Northern. The length of the tournament took its toll on the Ephs' performance however, as they ultimately went 0-2 on the day. "We were really showing the battle wounds of a national 2-day event," the wrestling team's head coach Scott Honecker remarked. The tournament began on Friday with a promising victory against a ranked opponent and a shot at 5th place, but the wear and tear of the matches against top-notch competition eventually led the Ephs to a 1-3 record.
"First year freshman Christopher Chorzepa was impressive in his collegiate debut this weekend," Honecker acknowledged. Chorzepa wrestled at the 184 weight class, going 3-0 over the course of the tournament with a tech and a pin against quality competition.
Daniel Sedita represented Williams in the 125lb weight class, going 1-1 on the day.
Carson Brooks (141) bounced back from a defeat in his first match of the day to pull out a 2:09 pin against his Ohio Northern opponent.
Jorge Lopez and Austin Wruble split time wrestling at 157 again today, going 1-0 and 0-1 on the day respectfully.
Freshman Martin Strenk (174) defeated his opponent form Thiel, but fell to Ohio Northern in a close match.
Timothy Garripoli (149), Kyle Gaffney (165), Anthony Brooks (197), and Ben Wertz (285) fought hard all day but ultimately went 0-2 in the second day of the tournament.
At the end of the day, coach Honecker was "really proud of the way our guys competed through adversity and discomfort while staying positive and focused."
The Ephs will have plenty of time to regroup and recuperate as they look forward to the NEWA Duals at Bridgewater State on the 26th.
