Ephs Drop Three Matches at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY – For the fifth straight competition the Williams wrestling team was on the road and this time the Ephs met up with SUNY Oneonta, Wesleyan and Ithaca on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.

The Ephs lost all three matches (two by six points or less) today at SUNY Oneonta and are now 7-10 on the year with one dual match remaining in the regular season. "Today was a challenge, especially since the team results didn't match the way we competed," stated Eph head coach Scott Honecker. "We have a young squad and have been having a hard time putting it all together. Consistency should come with more experience, because the young guys certainly have been doing the right things."

Scott Honecker's Ephs faced off against host SUNY Oneonta in their first match. The Ephs entered at 7-7 on the year while the Red Dragons entered at 10-3-1.

Williams led 4-3 after the 133 bout due to a major decision victory by Matt Morris to open the match at 125. SUNY Oneonta took a 6-4 lead with a win at 141and built up a 16-7 lead with three bouts remaining.

Eph seniors Chris Chorzepa (184) and Martin Strenk (197) gave the Ephs a 19-16 lead when they registered pins, but SUNY Oneonta got a pin at heavyweight to collect the 22-19 win.

Chris Chorzepa at 184 won for the third time on the day, this time by decision. The highlight of the match for the Ephs belonged to Brendon Seyfried (141) who defeated Ithaca's Nick Wahba who was ranked fifth nationally by a score of 3-2.

"Chris Chorzepa is wrestling better than ever before," noted Honecker. "His offense has evolved and expanded and he has always been a fierce competitor. Brendon Seyfried had the biggest win of the day and that should give him some confidence headed to the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Martin Strenk hit some buzz saws today but he can turn one of those losses around in three weeks. Matt Morris is still getting better and he is really leading with his actions."

"We have three weeks until the NCAA Northeast Regionals and we need to become very focused," Honecker said. "We have struggled in duals and battled adversity. We have a great opportunity. I'm excited to see how much better we can get over the next three weeks and to show it at the NCAA qualifier."

The Ephs will close out the regular season portion of their 2016-17 schedule with a dual match at home on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Castleton University in Lasell Gym.
