HARTFORD, CT - At the 2018 men's squash college nationals held at Trinity College as well as a couple other neighboring high schools and universities, the Ephs fought their way to a #21 ranked finish.
The Ephs competed in the third division of the tournament, which meant they were playing for the #17-24 postions nationally.
The Ephs opened their nationals campaign with a nailbiting loss to Middlebury in a match that for the whole day felt like it could have one either way. After the first two rounds of play, the match was deadlocked at 3-3, with highlights including a strong four game win from senior co-captain Jamie Havran (#9), a really solid 3-0 win from junior John Fitzgerald (#2), and a sensational marathon win from senior co-captain Andrew Litvin (#8), who earned the Ephs another point with a 24-22 triumph in the deciding fifth game. Unfortunately, the Ephs were unable to take any of the matches from the final wave of play, and stumbled to an eventual 6-3 loss.
After heartbreaking defeat to Middlebury on Friday, the Ephs came up against Amherst on Saturday. The Ephs got off to a great start, winning all three of the opening matches in addition to all three of the following ones. Senior co-captains Jamie Havran (#9) and Andrew Litvin (#8) continued their strong play with another pair of wins. Freshman Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#4) dropped the only point of the day in a five game loss en route to an 8-1 victory for the Ephs.
On Sunday, the Ephs took on MIT in the final match of nationals weekend. It was a slow start for the team as they went down 2-1 after the first wave of play, although senior co-captain Jamie Havran (#9) was able to earn yet another point for the Ephs, taking him to 3-0 for the weekend. Fellow senior co-captain Andrew Litvin (#8) also won his third five game match of the weekend, after coming back from 2-0 down to eventually win. Litvin's win, accompanied by two more strong wins from junior John Fitzgerald (#2) and David Pincus (#5), led the Ephs to a sweep of the second wave of play which took the team to a 4-2 lead, in need of just one win from the final wave to bring the Ephs over the finish line. Despite tough five game defeats for freshman Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#4) and Ben Eisenberg (#7), sophomore Carl Shuck (#1) was able to seal the 5-4 win.
