NEW YORK, NY - On a chilly night at Columbia's SL Green StreetSquash Center, the #20 ranked Ephs (3-2) were beaten 8-1 by the #7 ranked Columbia Lions (3-2).
The night started fairly promising for the Ephs with some strong play from the opening round of freshman Udai Pal (#3) and senior co-captains Carl Shuck (#6) and Claude Smith (#7). Pal put in another exceptional performance to earn a 3-1 upset victory. With the match poised at 1-1, Pal showed off his skills with some brilliant winners that carried him to victory. Shuck battled hard throughout and also found his match in the balance at 1-1, but was unlucky in the last couple games, succombing to a four game loss. Smith pushed his opponent, but ultimately lost 3-0.
Following on were sophomore Jacob Bassil (#2), junior AJ Solecki (#5), and freshman Charles "Chas" Merrill (#8). Bassil got himself locked into a beefy affair, but was ultimately defeated by a 3-0 scoreline. Solecki and Merrill also fought hard, but were unable to make significant inroads against their opponents and also fell 3-0.
Last on court were junior Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#1) and seniors Will Means (#4) and David Pincus (#9). Means struggled throughout and was beaten in three games. Khosrowshahi and Pincus each pushed their opponents with a number of close games but also stumbled to 3-0 defeats.
The Ephs will look to build on positives from the match as they continue training through finals and winter break before facing off against Dartmouth and Middlebury at home on January 4th and 5th, respectively.
