Brunswick, ME – The #17 ranked Ephs (14-9) lost a tight 7-2 final against #2 ranked Trinity (16-1) on Sunday to finish the 2020 NESCAC Championships in second place.
Despite being underdogs, the cows looked to be in the match throughout. The three senior co-captains, Will Means (#3), Carl Shuck (#5), and Claude Smith (#8), came out ready to fight and took it to the Bants. Smith came out victorious in a titanic five game battle to get Williams on the board. Shuck played some great squash in a battle of his own, but was eventually defeated 3-2. Means had some bright spots but eventually fell by a 3-0 scoreline.
Following on were juniors Wyatt Khosrowshahi (#2) and AJ Solecki (#6), as well as senior David Pincus (#7). Khosrowshahi and Pincus fought, but finished short of the finish line in respective 3-0 and 3-1 defeats. Solecki found himself locked in yet another five gamer, but fell agonizingly short in a tough encounter.
The underclass trio of freshmen Udai Pal (#4) and Charles "Chas" Merrill (#9), and sophomore Jacob Bassil (#1) concluded the Ephs' play. Merrill put in one of his best performances of the season and powered to a 3-0 win. Pal played a back and forth match, but eventually fell short in five games. Bassil struggled against a tough opponent and lost 3-0.
Coach Blair Dils had this to comment after the conclusion of the day's play: "It's not often we can say we had a chance to beat Trinity, but we really had a chance today. We'll look to build on this momentum in the next couple weeks before heading off to nationals."
