Springfield, MA – Today, the Ephs traveled to Springfield College to compete in the annual Doug Parker Tournament. Unlike previous dual meets, the Doug Parker Tournament features 15 wrestlers from Williams College competing in a bracket-style format in their respective weight classes. The tournament brought together some of the top wrestlers from across the Northeast. Despite the tough competition, the Ephs stood out as a well-drilled and talented team, showcasing their ability to out-work, out-muscle, and out-wrestle their opponents. The Ephs earned an impressive eight top-6 finishes throughout the day, and they return to Williamstown with much to be proud of.
At 125 pounds, first-year
Christopher Colon wasted no time securing his first win of the day. In his opening bout against Sean Calley, Colon scored an early take down followed by 3 near-fall points. He continued to wear down Calley throughout the first period and added another take down in the second to seal the win. Off the strength of this solid start, Colon went on to win five more matches, including a 2:17 fall over Beniamino DiCocco, and finished in sixth place on the day.
Junior
Caleb Seyfried impressed at 149 pounds, recording two victories at today's tournament. He opened with a 3-1 decision over Luke Temple in a closely contested bout. Seyfried scored a take down early and then carefully defended his lead throughout. Later, Seyfried secured a dominant performance over Mike Edwards of Coast Guard, again scoring an early take down to set the tone for the match.
Peter Kane went undefeated at the Doug Parker Tournament, claiming first place at 157 pounds. His perfect run was particularly impressive, as he conceded zero points in his four matches. Kane demonstrated why he is considered one of the most defensively sound wrestlers in Division III, consistently nullifying his opponents' attacks and preventing them from gaining any momentum.
At 165 pounds,
Fisher Stites had an outstanding tournament, finishing in second place. He began the day with an 8-3 victory over Akiva Lind of Wesleyan. The match was scoreless after the first period, but in the second, Stites scored an escape and a take down to take the lead. Lind managed to escape, narrowing the gap, but Stites added another takedown in the final period to secure the win. After another victory, Stites found himself in the semifinals against Cameron Hines. In a hard-fought match, Stites and Hines were tied 1-1 heading into sudden victory overtime. Stites sealed the win with a take down midway through the overtime period. Although Stites fell short in the final, his performance proved that he is a serious contender at this level.
Sean Tansey at 174 pounds and Jamie Evarts at 184 pounds also delivered strong performances. Evarts finished in second place, securing two victories by fall and an impressive 15-0 tech fall in the semifinals. His ability to control the pace of his matches and drive the intensity was on full display. Evarts' dominant win in the semifinals highlighted his potential as the Ephs move forward this season. Tansey earned a third-place finish, capped off by one of the most impressive comebacks of the day. In his third-place match, Tansey was down 7-0 heading into the third period after a tough start. However, Tansey mounted a dramatic comeback with a take down and 4 near-fall points, tying the match. With less than a minute remaining, Tansey's opponent, Ryan Boyer, escaped to regain the lead. But with just seconds left in the match, Tansey scored another take down to clinch the victory and secure third place.
Overall, the Ephs had an outstanding performance at the Doug Parker Tournament, and Eph head coach
Scott Honecker had this to say: "Today was a great outing for the team. The wrestlers should be excited about their performances—magnificent efforts across the board. As a coaching staff, we're excited about the strengths we saw, the areas where we can improve, and the path to our best performances in the coming months."
Looking ahead, the Ephs will face off in the RIT Invitational on December 7. With so much promise in this group and the guidance of coaching staff
Scott Honecker,
Tom Foote, and
William Smith, you won't want to miss what's next for the Ephs!
