Ephs Place First With Dominant Display at RIT Invitational

Ephs take First Place at RIT Invitational
Rochester, N.Y. – This weekend, the Ephs traveled to the Rochester Institute of Technology's Gordon Field House to compete in the RIT Invitational. In just their second tournament of the year, 15 Williams wrestlers entered brackets based on their weight classes, facing some of the toughest competition around. The Ephs delivered an outstanding performance, dominating across the board and ultimately winning the tournament with numerous individual podium finishes.

At 125 lbs, Christopher Colon continued his impressive form with four consecutive victories. In three of those bouts, he secured first-round pins, showcasing his ability to apply relentless pressure early in matches. Colon's dominant run earned him a spot in the 125-lb championship match. He started the bout aggressively, taking down his opponent, Brett Stanley, within the first minute. However, momentum shifted when Stanley strung together a series of escape points and a take down, leaving Colon trailing 6–3 by the end of the second period. Despite a valiant effort in the third round, Colon was unable to close the gap. Nevertheless, his exceptional performance earned him a well-deserved second-place finish for the team.

At 157 lbs, Peter Kane had a standout day. He cruised through his weight class, earning three victories by fall, two major decision victories, and a first-place finish. In the championship match, Kane faced Tyler Rossini of Oswego State. Kane quickly established control with a take down a minute into the first period, adding four near-fall points at the end of the period. In the second and third periods, Kane displayed discipline and precision, keeping Rossini off the scoreboard while extending his lead with two additional points, ultimately securing the title.

Fisher Stites, competing at 165 lbs, showcased resilience and determination. After opening the day with two victories, Stites narrowly lost his third match to CJ Shea. Undeterred, he bounced back to win three consecutive matches, earning a spot in the third-place bout. Stites faced early adversity against Jack Lamson, who scored a take down and four near-fall points, leaving Stites trailing 7–1 after the first period. However, Stites mounted a comeback, scoring a crucial take down late in the second period to shift momentum. Entering the final period just two points behind, Stites remained composed. With 30 seconds remaining, Lamson added an escape point, increasing the challenge, but Stites delivered a last-second take down to send the match into overtime. Riding the momentum, Stites secured another take down in overtime to clinch third place.

At 184 lbs, both Zach Borzio and Jamie Evarts delivered flawless performances, combining for six wins and zero losses. Evarts's efforts were highlighted by a complete performance against Simon Taraska of Norwhich, resulting in a 16-2 major decision victory. Borzio underscored his day with a 4-0 win over Mathew Gummere of Case Western where he took the advantage with 4 near fall points in the third period. Their dominance earned them the distinction of co-champions in the weight class, a testament to the depth and talent within the Williams wrestling squad.

Eph head coach Scott Honecker reflected on the team's success:
"I feel very fortunate to coach this group. Our success is fueled by their love for wrestling and the way they support one another. I'm excited to see them excel during finals, regroup, and gear up for the mid-winter stretch."

Looking ahead, the Ephs will return to action in the new year at the annual Williams Open, hosted in the historic Lasell Gymnasium. Don't miss another exciting showcase of premier wrestling talent!
