Peter Kane Dominates, Seizing 2nd Place Finish at DIII Championships

Kane earns immense semifinal victory by 1:35 fall
La Crosse, WI – Peter Kane concluded the Ephs 2023-24 campaign at the NCAA DIII Championships. In what was a promising season for the Williams College wrestling program, Kane was a stalwart. This weekend, he made all of Williams proud, placing 2nd at 157, and leading the Ephs to an 18th place finish overall.

In Kane's first bout, he faced opponent Cooper Pontelandolfo of NYU. These two highly touted wrestlers recently grappled against one another at the Northeast Regionals. In the previous meeting, Kane lost a narrow 2-1 decision. Today, on the other hand, Kane earned a commanding victory over Pontelandolfo. In this semifinal bout, Kane gained momentum with a take down just twenty-one seconds into the match. He then capitalized off this early advantage, securing a victory by fall 1 minute and 35 seconds in.

After notching his third win of the tournament, Kane headed to the 157 finals. In this contest, the Eph sophomore competed against senior Nolan Hertel of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. This closely contested match was scoreless until Hertel scored an escape point in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Then, in the third period, Kane leveled the bout with an escape point of his own. With less than a minute left, Hertel scored a take down, and while Kane escaped, there was not enough time for him to overcome the deficit. In the end, Kane lost this match 4-2, earning an impressive 2nd-place finish at the DIII Championships and cementing himself as one of three national finalists in William's history. In this weekend's premiere display of wrestling talent, Kane showed how formidable a competitor he already is, and how much he has to offer the Williams wrestler program during the rest of his time here.

Commenting on Kane's outstanding performances, Eph head coach Scott Honecker said: "Peter had an amazing weekend, becoming the 3rd national finalist in Williams' history. We couldn't be prouder of him. He knows the things it took to make it here, and he is prepared to do the things it will take to make the next step, becoming the dominant wrestler in Division III. We're excited for the opportunity to keep pushing forward."
