Williamstown, MA- After a tough defeat at Amherst yesterday, the Ephs bounced back in a major way, taking down Hamilton 9-0 in a clean sweep, only dropping one set on the way to victory.
After starting the match down 3-0 in doubles the day before, Williams came out today on fire, jumping out to a 3-0 after doubles. Mia Thomann and Ahn Lin got off the court in quick fashion with an 8-0 victory at the #3 spot, followed shortly by Annabelle Siegel and Jane Ladaga who won with a score of 8-2. At #1 doubles, Erica Ekstrand and Yuu Ishikawa managed to pull out an 8-5 win to complete the doubles sweep.Â
Fueled by the momentum of such a dominant doubles performance, the Ephs jumped out to a quick 4-0 overall match lead after Thomann won 6-0 6-0 at #4 singles, capping off a day in which she won 20 games won and lost 0. Shortly after, Siegel clinched the match, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-1 at #3 singles. Even though the win was secured, the Ephs did not relent, with Ananya Aggarwal playing a very solid match to win 6-3 6-3, followed by Yuu Ishikawa winning 6-3, 6-1 on court 2.Â
The last two matches of the day were battles, both of which Williams prevailed in. At #1 singles, senior captain Ekstrand prevailed 6-2, 6-4. Her opponent showed great resilience to battle back in the second set, but Ekstrand proved too strong, making the overall score 8-0. Finally, freshman Margaux Molyneux dropped the first set 6-4, but battled back to win 6-2 (10-2) in the third set tiebreaker.Â
Eph head Coach Anik Cepeda commented, "Captain Erica Ekstrand said that our doubles was a step in the right direction. I agree completely. They also had some of the best pre-match energy I've seen all year: laughing, singing, dancing, pumping each other up. Looking forward to working on our most aggressive doubles and singles games this week."
The #8 ranked Ephs will look to continue the positive momentum on a two match road trip next weekend, playing at Colby on Saturday, and Bowdoin on Sunday.
