Williamstown, M.A. – The Eph Wrestling teaam kicked off the New Year in the historic Lasell Gymnasium, hosting the Williams Open. This annual tournament attracts top wrestling talent from across the Northeast, competing fiercely in their respective weight classes. The Williams College wrestlers left a strong impression during their outing, with multiple Ephs achieving stellar finishes. Heading into the weekend, the Williams College squad was ranked 23rd nationally, with three wrestlers currently in the top 20 for their weight classes. Junior captain
Peter Kane is ranked 2nd, Jamie Evarts moved up to 16th, and
Fisher Stites holds the 20th spot. These athletes continue to demonstrate why they are so highly regarded by The Open Mat.
At 133 and 141 pounds, Senior
John Schneider and Sophomore
Tylor Stubbs dominated, earning 3rd and 1st place, respectively. Schneider opened the tournament with a decisive 10-6 victory by decision but stumbled in his second bout. Despite this setback, Schneider rallied to win his next two matches, securing a commendable 3rd place. Stubbs, on the other hand, delivered an outstanding performance, going undefeated in all four bouts. His tenacity and skill overwhelmed his competition as he pinned his first two opponents. In the semifinals and finals, Stubbs showcased his ability to navigate close matches, registering two more victories by decision.
Junior
Peter Kane, competing at 157 pounds, excelled yet again. He clinched 1st place with three victories by fall, culminating in a commanding 9-0 win in the final. Kane's dominance this season continues to set the standard on the mat for his teammates. His remarkable performance today underscores why The Open Mat considers him the second-best wrestler in the nation.
Jamie Evarts and
Thomas Goodwin, competing at 184 and 285 pounds, also shone brightly, each securing 2nd place finishes. First-year wrestler Evarts has enjoyed a phenomenal debut season as an Eph. Today, he added to his growing list of accomplishments by pinning his first opponent and earning a decisive 19-3 technical fall victory in his second match, showcasing his versatility in scoring points. After a third win in the semifinals, Evarts fell short in the final but has much to be proud of. His promising start establishes a strong foundation for continued success.
Goodwin started his tournament with two commanding victories, pinning both of his opponents using his strength and experience to dominate. These wins earned him a spot in the final at 285 pounds. In a hard-fought match, Goodwin faced a formidable opponent, Mason Sprinkel of Norwich, and ultimately came up short. Nevertheless, Goodwin's stellar day highlighted the progress he is making with every match.
Looking ahead, the Ephs will travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Budd Whitehill Duals on Friday, January 10, and Saturday, January 11. Don't miss this premier showcase of wrestling talent!
