Providence, RI – This Saturday,
Peter Kane proudly represented the Ephs at the NCAA DIII Championship. After securing two impressive victories in a strong performance yesterday, Kane took time to rest and refocus for another round of action this afternoon. Ultimately, he delivered an outstanding performance, placing 5th overall. His wrestling career at Williams College, thus far, has been marked by numerous successful outings on the NCAA championship stage, and today's display reinforced both his significance to the program and his season-long dominance on the mat.
In his first bout, Kane was pitted against Ryan Smith of Stevens. Both wrestlers adopted calculated approaches, with their skilled defenses keeping the match scoreless through the first two periods. Finally, in the third period, Kane broke through—first scoring an escape point. As the bout neared its conclusion, Smith was forced to take risks, which Kane capitalized on by securing a take down and extending his lead. He was later awarded an additional point for riding time, clinching a 5-0 victory.
Later, Kane faced Eric Kinkaid of Loras. Kinkaid gained an advantage in the second period with a take down, but Kane responded quickly, escaping to narrow the deficit. Despite his persistent efforts, Kane was unable to reclaim the lead, and the match ended in a 4-3 decision in favor of Kinkaid, sending Kane to the fifth-place match.
Kane closed out his campaign in dominant fashion, earning an 11-2 major decision victory over Tyler Goebel. The day before, Kane had suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to Goebel, but today's rematch underscored his resilience and adaptability. He came alive in the second half of the bout, securing a take down late in the second period. Once he broke through, he was unstoppable, adding another take down in the third period, followed by four near-fall points as he searched for the pin. His decisive win to secure 5th place epitomized the high-level wrestling he has demonstrated all season.
The Ephs have concluded a highly successful 2024-25 campaign, defined by top-tier wrestling, indomitable spirit, and a strong sense of community. With
Peter Kane and
Jamie Evarts competing the Eph team finished 38th at the NCAA Championship.
Here is what Head Coach
Scott Honecker had to about the superb weekend: "Our men wrestled great this weekend to cap off quite the Williams Wrestling season. I love this team and I am so proud of what we did together this year.
Jamie proved to himself he's capable of competing effectively on a national level. Given his passion for wrestling, I'm confident he will do the things in his control to give himself the opportunity to return and win here next year.
Peter Kane is a historically good Williams Wrestler. Although the national championship eluded him this weekend, he competed valiantly over seven matches to get his 3rd All American honor. His consistency is remarkable and he is a joy to coach. I know he is already thinking about the next steps to be become the second 4-Time all American in Williams history and the first national champion."
