Middletown, CT – This Sunday, the Ephs wrapped up a triumphant weekend at Wesleyan College, competing in the NCAA Northeast Regional. After an action-packed first day, eight Williams College wrestlers battled against top-tier competition for podium finishes and coveted spots in the NCAA Championships. It was an exceptional day for the Ephs, filled with high-level grappling, competitive intensity, and raw emotion. Williams secured an impressive 4th place finish overall out of 18 teams, with junior
Peter Kane and first year Jamie Evarts emerging as champions in their respective weight classes.
At 157 pounds, Kane was in peak form. Building on his dominant performances from the previous day, he secured a commanding 7-0 decision over Matt Lucas of Roger Williams. As the competition stiffened, Kane remained composed, dictating the pace and neutralizing Lucas with impeccable shot defense. In the championship bout, he faced a familiar opponent, Nate Camiscioli of Castleton, whom he had edged out 2-1 in their February 14 match up during the Ephs' last regular season dual. This time, Kane showcased his growth, delivering a decisive 8-0 major decision victory. As the Northeast Regional Champion at 157, Kane now advances to the NCAA Championships, where he will compete against 17 of the nation's best Division III wrestlers—an opportunity to further demonstrate his remarkable progress this season.
First-year standout Jamie Evarts delivered a sensational performance, capturing the Northeast Regional title at 184 pounds. He kicked off the day with an emphatic 11-2 major decision over Gabe Monroe of Coast Guard, racking up three unanswered take downs in the first two periods. In the championship match, he faced Castleton's Sampson Wilkins in a razor-tight contest. The score was deadlocked at 4-4 after the first period, with neither competitor conceding an inch. As the bout entered the final period, Evarts came alive, escaping from the bottom position before executing a clutch take down with just 25 seconds left to clinch the victory. As a first year champion, Evarts will join Kane at the NCAA Championships March 14-15.
Junior
Caleb Seyfried continued to be a pillar of consistency for the Ephs at 149 pounds, capping off his season with a strong 4th-place finish. He opened the day with a dominant 8-1 victory over Luke Temple of Springfield, securing an early take down followed by 2 near fall points. In the next round, he faced Nate Fitt of Coast Guard and once again rose to the occasion, sealing the match with a well-executed late takedown. In the 3rd-place bout, Seyfried battled fiercely but fell in a narrow 4-2 decision against Elijah Cyr of Castleton. His stellar performances throughout the weekend underscore his immense value to the Williams squad.
Senior
Jack Napeloni closed out his collegiate wrestling career with a strong 7th-place finish. In his final bout, he defeated Shaun McLaughlin of Roger Williams in a gritty 4-2 decision, showcasing his ability to control the pace and stifle his opponent's attacks.
Fellow senior
Thomas Goodwin at 285 pounds also secured 7th place, ending his Williams tenure on a high note. He punctuated his weekend with a impressive victory, pinning Michael Alfonso of Rhode Island College in swift fashion. Goodwin's impressive finish, coupled with his three victories throughout the tournament, exemplify the tenacity he has brought to the team all season.
Several other Ephs registered podium finishes. Tyler Stubbs (141),
Fisher Stites (165), and
Henry Forte (174) all delivered strong performances. Stubbs wrapped up a successful campaign with an 8th-place finish. Stites earned 6th place with a thrilling fall at the 3:33 mark against Christopher McCarthy of Rhode Island College. Meanwhile, Forte's dominant major decision over Andrew Maiorini of Little Three rival Wesleyan propelled him to a 7th-place finish.
The Ephs can reflect on this weekend as a resounding success, both individually and as a program. It's evident that head coach
Scott Honecker is building something truly special, as the Williams wrestlers continue to make their college proud—not just through their results on the mat, but through their relentless spirit and togetherness.
For
Peter Kane and Jamie Evarts, the journey isn't over yet. The duo will travel to Providence, Rhode Island, to compete in the NCAA Championships on March 14-15. Stay tuned for more updates as they prepare to take on the nation's best!
