BABSONÂ PARK, Mass. - The Williams College field hockey team came up just short in overtime to Babson on Sunday afternoon, the team's first loss of the season.
The Ephs were coming off a hard-fought 3-1 win over No. 2-ranked Tufts on Saturday, and came up just short of getting another result against a top-ranked team, as the No. 7Â Beavers scored six minutes into overtime to get the win.
Babson had jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Ephs tied the game three minutes into the second half, with first-year Sawyer Rowland scoring the first goal of her career, assisted from senior captain Pilar Torres.
The second half of the game was scoreless, despite a number of opportunities for both teams, with both sides registering five shots in the fourth quarter alone. The overtime was similar, with the two teams having three shots before Babson scored on its fourth of the extra session.
The Ephs had a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners, and sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith registered three saves for Williams, including two in overtime. Torres and senior captain Kiki Higgins both registered four shots during the game to lead the team.
Williams will look to bounce back Saturday when the team travels to Amherst for an 11 a.m. matchup.
