On Friday, October 22nd the Morning Joe co-hosts Mika Brzezinski ’89 and Joe Scarborough aired their MSNBC show from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the shadows of the University of Alabama, where Joe had been honored the night before.
When Erin Burnett ’98 came on the show around 8:30 a.m. to do her segment on the economy she and Mika got talking about maybe doing a show from Williamstown and the Williams campus. While Mika and Erin were bantering about finding a diner in Williamstown to host the show or even possibly doing it at the Purple Pub, emails and texts began pouring into Mika’s phone and folks started contacting Williams about the opportunity.
Both Ephs were multi-sport athletes in the Purple Valley. Brzezinski lettered in cross country and track & field, while Burnett lettered in field hockey and lacrosse for Williams.
Sports Information Director Dick Quinn contacted Brzezinski via text message to assess the seriousness of the intent to bring the show to Williams. When the intent was confirmed, Brzezinski then went to work convincing the powers that be at MSNBC that going to Williams would be a good idea.
With midterm elections looming, and Joe and Mika not crazy about doing a traditional election night show, they developed another plan that included a trip to the Purple Valley.
“There’s a lot of questions about America and the future of the two-party system and Joe and I get asked to speak about this all the time,” stated Brzezinski. “We decided to get away from all of the chatter on election night and talk to America’s future leaders, so of course I immediately thought of my alma mater Williams.”
That’s how “Beyond the Midterms: a New Way Forward” came to Williams College on election night Tuesday, November 2 at 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. on the MainStage of the ’62 Theatre.
Tickets are required to attend the event. Students can email firstname.lastname@example.org and non-students can obtain tickets through the ’62 Theatre Box Office – 413-587-2425. The ’62 Theatre Box Office is open Tuesday thru Saturday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
