TUCSON, AZ -- Trailing by six runs heading into the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday, things were not looking so good for the Williams College baseball team.
Eleven runs later, it was a much brighter situation. The Ephs scored 11 times in the eighth, nine before the second out, to stun Macalester, 15-10 and improve to 3-2 on the season. They will play Augusburg in a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. MST.
Williams senior Darren Hartwell was 4 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the win over Macalaster. Taylor Mondshein was 3 for 6 with two RBI. Kirby Neuner hit 1 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Beau Horan was 1 for 3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Wednesday's game featured 25 runs, 29 hits and 20 walks. Macalester had scored five runs in the top of the eighth to break open a close game and build a 10-4 lead.
Horan walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Mondshein singled and Hartwell drew a walk to load the bases. Matt Kastner drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. After the first out, K.C. Murphy singled, driving two runs, and suddently it was 10-7. Neuner followed with a two-run single. Horan drew the third bases-loaded wlak of the inning to make it 10-10.
Mondshein then laced a two-run single to give the Ephs a 12-10 lead. Hartwell added an RBI-single, and Hernandez capped the frame with a booming two-run triple to account for the final score.
