TUCSON, AZ. — Senior KC Murphy capped a three-run ninth-inning rally Tuesday with a two-out, two-run single that lifted the Williams College baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Lewis & Clark University.
The Ephs improved to 5-6 with the win heading into a Wednesday doubleheader that features games against Luther and Beuna Vista.
Williams trailed 6-4 entering the bottom of the ninth Wednesday, and 6-5 with two outs and no one on before rallying for the win. Kirby Neuner got things going with a lead-off double and moved to third on Beau Horan's groundout to the right side. Taylor Mondshein scored Neuner with another groundout, but it left the Ephs with one out left and no one base.
Darren Hartwell got things started with his third hit of the game. Matt Kastner drew a walk and Bryan Jones another to load the bases. That's when Murphy drilled a line drive between third and short to bring home Hartwell and Kastner with the tying and winning runs.
Trailing 6-3, Williams got a key run back in its half of the seventh when Andrew Bishop led off with a pinch-hit double. He scored when Hartwell's grounder to short was misplayed.
Williams had taken a 2-0 lead in the first when Hartwell singled and stole second with one out. Kastner's RBI-single made it 1-0. Kastner scored when Patrick Blizzard struck out but reached first on a wild pitch.
Williams had 10 hits. Hartwell was 3 for 5 and Phil McGovern was 2 for 4.
Jacob Slater got the win for the Ephs, tossing a scoreless ninth inning and allowing one walk and no hits while striking out two. Lucas Casso also threw a scoreless inning of relief. Kelso Stevens allowed one run in one inning, but it was unearned.
Arnie Capute got the start and shut out L&C for the first four innings. His final line was six innings pitched, five hits allowed, four walks and four strikeouts. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned.
