WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Host Williams (9-8) came back from an early deficit to defeat the MCLA Trailblazers (2-11) by a final score of 8-3 at Bobby Coombs Field in non-conference baseball action. MCLA took an early 1-0 lead, but Williams tied the game in the third and took a 4-1 lead in the fifth, going on to win, 8-3.
After MCLA had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Williams responded in the bottom of the third. With one out, senior third baseman Taylor Mondshein reached on an error, advancing to second on an errant throw by MCLA shortstop J.T. Ferraro. Mondshein stole third, and senior outfielder Darren Hartwell walked and stole second. With runners on second and third, sophomore Phil McGovern scored Mondshein on an RBI groundout to first, tying the game at one.
In the fifth, Williams scored three times to take the lead for good. Senior Thomas Stephens led off the inning with a hard-hit single that dropped in front of the center fielder, freshman Beau Horan was hit by a pitch, and Taylor Mondshein reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. Darren Hartwell grounded to first, scoring Stephens and leaving the Ephs with men on second and first with no outs. McGovern then smacked a long double over the center fielder, scoring Horan and Mondshein.
MCLA rallied to bring the score to 4-3 in the top of the seventh, with an RBI single by Ferraro scoring one of their runs, but Williams scored three in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to put the game away.
Freshman starter Arnie Capute (2-0) was credited with the win for Williams, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits in 6+ innings of work. Capute walked three and struck out two. Williams head coach Bill Barrale said of Capute's outing, "He was able to throw his fastball for a strike over the plate. He's got good stuff." Capute was relieved by senior righthanders Charlie Baxter and Lucas Casso, who held the lead for the Ephs. Reliever Cody Weaver (0-4) took the loss for MCLA, after being charged with three runs in the Williams fifth.
Leading 4-3 entering the seventh, singles from Horan, Mondshein, and Hartwell loaded the bases with no outs. McGovern then singled sharply to right, scoring Horan for McGovern's fourth RBI of the game. Senior first baseman KC Murphy then singled in Mondshein and Hartwell, extending the Williams lead to 7-3. In the eighth, a two-out RBI single by Mondshein gave Williams an 8-3 lead.
McGovern led Williams offensively, going 3-4 with four RBI. Of McGovern's day at the plate, Coach Barrale said, "Phil's a good hitter. He's a sophomore, played last year in almost every game. He's a talented hitter, batted third today, and that's what we expect from him." Mondshein added two hits and scored three runs, and Murphy had two RBI. For MCLA, Chase Preite went 2-5 with an RBI.
Williams next plays on Friday, April 5 in a NESCAC home game against Little Three rival Wesleyan. The game will start at 4:00 PM. MCLA will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 in a MASCAC doubleheader at Worcester State.
