TUCSON, AZ -- The Williams College baseball team used a 8-run third inning Monday to dispatch Valley City State, 15-9, at the Kino Sports Complex and improve to 2-1 on the young season.
Williams will face Concordia-Wisconsin in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
The Ephs' bats remain red-hot, banging out 18 hits in the victory. Luke Pierce was 3 for 5 with four RBI. Marco Hernandez was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Jack Roberts was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Williams trailed 1-0 but tied the game in the bottom of the first when Hernandez's single scored Matt Kastner, who was 1 for 1 with three runs scored in the wkn.
It was still 1-1 going into the bottom of the thrd. Roberts broke the tie with an RBI-single that scored Kastner. Hernandez followed with a triple that scored Roberts. An error on Jack Cloud's groundball allowed Herhandez to score. Tommy Stephens singled home Cloud. Kelso Stevens and Luke Pierce then roped back-to-back two-run doubles for a 9-1 lead.
Tom Murphy (1-0) got the win for the Ephs, going the first four innings and allowing seven hits and two runs, both earned. He walled one and struck out six.
